Mike has a huge heart for missionary work and evangelism and has served on numerous overseas short-term mission trips. He loves to preach and teach and marvels at the power and work of the local church in the world. He feels extremely blessed to serve at Main Street UMC.
He is an Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology at Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC; and is a Senior Fellow of the Polycarp Community, Center for Evangelism and Missional Church Studies, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University.
He earned the following degrees:
- Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1988.
- Masters of Theology from Duke University in 1992.
- Doctor of Ministry from Southern Methodist University in 2002.
- PhD from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2014.
Mike is also the author of several books: The Oxbridge Evangelist: Motivations, Practices, and Legacy of C.S. Lewis; As the Broken White Lines Become One: A Spiritual Travelogue; and has coedited The Logic of Evangelism Revisited.
His wife is Rhonda Gehring. She is a school nurse in the Iredell County/Statesville school system and was awarded “School Nurse of the Year” in 2018. They have three adult children.
