Hands Together Volunteer Opportunities, Sat. Sept. 17 (some alternate date projects below also)
(unless otherwise noted, opportunities begin after breakfast (7:30) and a brief commissioning service at 8 a.m. & are for ages 16 & up). Most end by 1 p.m. Sign up to participate after church in the narthex or download a form from the church website.
Bethany Café, Team Leader Vicki Horner
The Bethany Café team will be serving all the volunteers breakfast on Sept. 17 (you will probably be needed by 6:30 a.m.)
Bethesda Center for the Homeless Team Leader Mike Young
Serve a cookout lunch to the homeless. Leave from the church at 10am. on Sept. 17. The youth have been going to Bethesda Center monthly, but everyone is encouraged to be part of this team.
Children of Zion Ministries Team Leaders Jan Hampton
We are having a backyard-style carnival at Rupert Bell Park with Carol Fulton and her ministry that our youth have been supporting. Children 3rd grade & up can run games, such as ring toss (but must be accompanied by an adult).
Children’s Home Team Leader Chuck Foster
Help landscape and beautify this beautiful Methodist facility in Winston-Salem.
Crisis Control Ministries Team Leaders: Chip Cole
Landscaping and parking lot cleanup. Crisis Control helps those facing crisis with food, financial assistance & more.
Food Bank Team Leader Dennis Garman
This is an alternative date project. Dennis will take a team to help sort food at Second Harvest Food Bank on Sat. November 19. You can do a project on Sept. 17 AND this project (or the next one)!
Forsyth Jail & Prison Ministry Team Leader Debbi Butner
Alternative date project (Oct 9.) Host worship service at the local prison. Meet at Main St. UMC at 5:15 p.m., return 8:45 p.m.. Each participant will need to complete short background check paperwork and is asked to bring a sweet or salty snack and a 2 liter drink.
Homebound Visitation Team Leaders Dale Hilton, Cathy Vlastakis
Are you better at chatting and listening than at painting and nailing? Visits to homebound members and nursing homes will be pre-arranged. Each visitor makes one or two 30-60 minute visits. Most will be morning visits but afternoon visits possible. .
New Story Church Team Leader Frank Robbins
Alternate date project (Labor Day, Sept 5 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. ) We will be helping with a Labor Day Picnic at New Story’s Waughtown campus, which serves diverse groups, including the homeless.
Next Steps Domestic Violence Shelter Team Leaders Wayne Knox & Fred Carter
This house shelters women and children fleeing domestic violence. Painting inside, cleaning gutters, & handyman repair.
Next Steps Ministries Thrift Store Team Leader Willie Craven
This store, which supports the Domestic Violence Shelter, needs cabinets built, painting done and other projects.
Open Arms Ministries Team Leader Marc Engle
Physical repair, landscaping, cleaning and organizing or painting projects. Open Arms offers programming in the Southeast Winston Hispanic community.
Nursing Home Singing Team Leader Nancy Blakemore
Nancy will be taking an intergenerational group to sing at area nursing homes. Children welcome. No choir experience required.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Team Leader Judy Osborne
Spend your morning knitting. Our prayer shawl ministry makes shawls for people going through rough times or who just need a special boost. Not sure you know how to make a shawl? No problem, they’ll help you out.
Shepherd’s Center Team Leader Janie Hayes
This team will do yard clean up requested by senior citizens in our community through the Shepherd’s Center.
Trustees Church Improvement Team Leader Wayne Boger
Help spruce up our buildings and grounds. Painting, landscaping and more. This is at church, so it’s a good choice if you need to go to a soccer game & come back.
