SPRC chairperson Joy Bodnar announced that our new senior pastor and family will be Rev. Dr. Michael “Mike” J. Gehring, his wife Rhonda, and his children Laura, John, and Emily. Mike will be in the office starting (7/9) and will preach his first sermon on (7/15).
As of July 15, our new senior pastor will be Dr. Michael J. Gehring (Mike). He is currently the Senior Pastor at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville, NC.
His wife is Rhonda Gehring. She is a school nurse in the Iredell County/Statesville school system and was awarded “Nurse of the Year” for this year. They have three children. Laura (26), John (23) and Emily (18).
Mike has a huge heart for missionary work and evangelism. He and Rhonda spent the week after Easter with a team from their church on a mission trip to Costa Rica.
Mike is a great teacher and a life-long learner. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology at Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC; and is a Senior Fellow of the Polycarp Community, Center for Evangelism and Missional Church Studies, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University.
He has the following degrees:
- Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1988.
- Masters of Theology from Duke University in 1992.
- Doctor of Ministry from Southern Methodist University in 2002.
- Ph.D. from University of Manchester (UK) in 2014.
Mike is also the author of a published book on C.S. Lewis (a favorite of many at Main Street). Many are familiar with C.S. Lewis as an author and scholar, but Mike has uncovered Lewis’ passion for evangelism in a book entitled, The Oxbridge Evangelist: Motivations, Practices, and Legacy of C.S. Lewis.
Mike’s past two churches have been downtown churches and he has a preference for downtown churches. His experiences have prepared him well to be the Senior Pastor of Main Street.
Mike and Rhonda’s first Sunday at Main Street will be July 15. In the meantime, please write Mike a note at this address: PO Box 5426, Statesville NC 28687. Introduce yourself and let Mike and his family know that you are looking forward to meeting them, and that you are praying for them.
