Below is a brief description of some of the committees, ministry groups, programs, and areas volunteers are needed. Please use this guide to help you select new areas of ministry you would like to be involved in when filling out your 2011-2012 Time & Talent Survey.
Lay Leaders
Counsels and works with the pastor and staff in all matters of the church, especially in involving the laity in the total program of the church.
Committee Members/Chairperson of Nurture/Outreach/Witness / Worship Ministry Groups
Be apart of the groups that help develop a vision for ministry which moves the church toward fulfillment of its stated mission. Be apart of the meetings of the respective ministries’ groups, giving special attention to the development of specific program objectives by the work areas and committees for which they are responsible that will accomplish the Church Council’s vision for ministry.
Annual Conference Delegate
In advance of the Annual Conference session, makes every effort to become informed about the issues to come before it and to prepare him/her to represent the local church community.
Staff Parish Relations Committee/Chairperson
Aids the pastor and other professional staff in making their ministry effective by being available for counsel. Keeps each staff person advised concerning conditions within the congregation as they affect relations between him/her and the people.
Lay Leadership Committee
Intentionally becomes familiar with as many persons in the congregation as possible. Lists their gifts, skills, interests, knowledge, and commitment. Studies the responsibilities for each leadership position and identifies the gifts needed to function effectively in this position.
Board of Trustees Committee/Chairperson
Is responsible for the purchase, sale, mortgage, encumbrance, construction, repairing, remodeling and maintenance of any and all property of the local church including the parsonage located at 5933 Kenton Drive. Sets policies for use of all church facilities and equipment.
Finance Committee/Chairperson
Receives and compiles annually from all budgeted agencies in the church items to be included in the church budget. Submits the compiled budget to the Church Council, with recommendations, for official action by the Church Council. Develops and implements annually a financial campaign to seek commitments to underwrite the ensuing year’s budget.
Church Treasurer
Establishes appropriate financial accounts as directed by the Church Council. Disburses all monies contributed to causes represented in the local church budget, and such other funds and contributions as the Church Council may direct.
Church Council Board Members at Large
Listen to the needs and concerns of the church and serve as representatives of the general membership in making decisions concerning the life and program of the church.
Stewardship Committee/Chairperson
Offers support with yearly financial campaign.
College-Age Ministries Coordinator
Studies the needs and concerns of college-age members of our church and community. In conjunction with the Director of Youth and Young Adults, defines goals and objectives for the congregation’s ministry to college-age students.
Youth Council
Works with and provides guidance to the Youth Council. Plans projects to include all youth related to the ministries of the congregation (i.e. Youth Sunday, Parson’s Table), Advises in all aspects of youth ministries.
Youth Advisor
Youth counselors assist with the weekly UMYF meetings, help lead Sunday night programs, participate in retreats and special outings with the youth, and develop personal relationships with the youth. Youth counselors work hand-in-hand with Youth Director to ensure that Main Street United Methodist Church has a successful youth ministry. You do not need any experience, only a love for God, a love for young people, and a heart ready to have FUN.
Snack Supper Provider
Volunteers provide and serve a light supper either in conjunction with other volunteers for our Sunday night youth fellowship.
Special Event Chaperone
Volunteers serve as a chaperone for special outings or events.
Transportation
Adults volunteers who are willing to drive a church van, rental van, mini-bus, or their own vehicle as needed for youth events.
Financial Support
Adults who are willing to support youth fundraising efforts, and who might be able to help with scholarships to enable all youth to participate in events.
Youth Sunday school Teacher
Sunday school teachers teach either the middle high or senior high Sunday school class on Sunday morning. Curriculum is provided.
Youth Substitute Sunday school Teacher
Volunteers serve as substitute Sunday school teachers when needed. Curriculum is provided.
Confirmation Leader
These people rotate teaching the Confirmation Class in the fall and spring during the Sunday school hour. Curriculum is provided.
Faith Partner
A Faith Partner works with a confirmand (6th grade youth) through their confirmation journey. A Faith Partner shares his or her faith with the confirmand, and helps the confirmand to grow in his or her own faith.
Children’s Council Committee Members
Works with the Minister of Christian Education to formulate the calendar for the current year, plugs in activities and delegates the responsibilities to insure success of these activities, such as an annual family skating party, Easter egg hunt, Sunday School teacher appreciation breakfast, promotion Sunday activities (where needed), and Halloween activities.
Sunday school Teacher
The Sunday school teacher prepares the weekly lessons for the assigned class. Curriculum is selected by the Minister of Christian Education.
Sunday school Assistant/Floater
The assistant helps the Sunday school teacher with the lesson each week.
Sunday school Substitute Teacher
The substitute teaches a class in the event the regular teacher is absent.
Nursery Volunteer
Parents and other church members are needed to assist in the infant nursery and the toddler nursery on a rotational basis. Volunteers are needed for Sunday school and all church services.
Assistant Vacation Bible School Director
The Assistant VBS Director works along with the Director of Children’s Ministry to carry out VBS.
Vacation Bible School Teacher/Assistant
A VBS teacher plans and implements the material for VBS for a specific age group or activity and attends each night of VBS.
Kids Space Leader
These volunteers are responsible for working on a rotating basis to implement Bible study, mission projects, fellowship, and recreation for monthly Children’s Fellowship for children ages four to third grade.
Newborn Support
Visits each family in our church that has a new baby. The purpose of the visit is to deliver the rosebud that was placed on the alter during the 11:00am worship service and a small gift. This is very important visit and is very appreciated by each family.
Moments with Children
Moments with Children volunteers prepare a “children’s sermon” based on the sermon text for the day and present it during at either the 8:30 or 11:00 A.M. worship service.
Bereavement Committee
Offers a meal in the event of the death of a church member or the child or spouse of a church member. The meal closest to the funeral service is the one usually served. Only one meal will be prepared by a group in the church, unless there is a real need as determined by the committee or a pastor.
Church History and Records Committee
Collects, organizes, and maintains the MSUMC archives. Shares the history of the church with the congregation through displays, historical sketches, and special programs.
Endowments Committee
Encourages church members to make wills in order that the causes they believe in, within the Main Street United Methodist Church, will be supported. Provides information to church members on how they can use their assets to the greatest advantage.
Parsonage Committee Member/Chairperson
Surveys the parsonage annually through a personal visit (within the first quarter of the year) and makes a list of all needs, including repairs and improvements. In consulting with the occupants, attempts to resolve each need or concern as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Linville Scholarship Committee
This committee sets policy and determines who will receive the college scholarship grant.
Cemetery Committee
This committee maintains and oversees the care of the Main Street United Methodist Church cemetery.
IT/MME Committee
This committee maintains, and at times, repairs the church computer equipment.
Teach Adult Sunday school
A Sunday school teacher prepares lessons for an adult Sunday school class. Some classes rotate teachers; others identify a team to do the teaching or teach a given curriculum on a weekly basis.
Substitute Adult Sunday school Teacher
A substitute fills in occasionally as needed.
United Methodist Men
The United Methodist Men meet the second Sunday of each month at 7:15am for breakfast and a program. They sponsor several events in the church and provide a place where men can grow in their faith and relationship with each other. The President is a member of the Church Council.
United Methodist Women
The UMW is a community of women, whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. They strive to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand the mission of the church. The group is divided into several circles that meet on a monthly basis. The President is a member of the Church Council.
Usher - 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. Services
Ushers distribute bulletins, count attendance, and assist in a variety of ways that help the service run smoothly.
Greeter - 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. Services
Greeters extend a welcome to members and visitors upon arrival for worship.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild makes sure everything in the chancel area of the church is in proper order for each worship service. Members are responsible for altar flowers, altar candles, changing paraments, and other duties.
Morning Prayer
Members of this group offer an opening prayer at the 8:30 A.M. worship service.
Lay Reader
Lay Readers read scripture, lead unison prayer, and lead the congregation through the first part of the service.
Sound Technician
This group works to ensure the sound system runs smoothly during worship services and to audio tape the services for the Tape Ministry.
The Chancel Chorale
Provides music for the 8:30am service. They meet every Monday evening from 7:00-8:30pm. Their musical selections range from traditional spirituals to contemporary music.
The Chancel Choir
Provides music for the 11:00am worship service and rehearses each Wednesday from 7:30-9:00pm. Musical selections include a variety of styles within a traditional service.
Instrumental Music/Orchestra
Volunteers may provide special instrumental music during worship services.
Praise Team
Performs contemporary music and praise choruses. This group leads the music for the 8:45am Jubilee!! Service, as well as other church musical events throughout the year. They rehearse on Thursday at 5:30pm in the Chapel Hall.
Tape Ministry
Audio copies of worship services are taken to homebound members.
Homebound Ministry
Homebound members who are in need of assistance with a variety of choirs, tasks, and errands. The homebound members can “adopted” by a Sunday school class that keeps in touch with them throughout the year. Some members of Main Street United Methodist Church are unable to rake leaves in the fall, plant flowers in the spring, do minor repairs, and other occasional activities because of age and/or physical ability. Volunteers would be available for the pastors to call when they learn that assistance is needed.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
The members of this ministry knit or crochet prayer shawls that will be given to those in need.
Stephen Ministry
A ministry of lay persons who are trained and supported to give confidential, one-on-one Christian care-giving to persons in the congregation or community who are going through troubled times.
Visitation Team
The team makes personal contact on Sunday afternoon with persons who have visited in worship services. The volunteers welcome the visitors, answer any questions, and invite them to visit with us again. The volunteers then report outcome of visits to the associate pastor to update our visitors list.
Fellowship Friend
Church members are matched up with persons who recently joined Main Street United Methodist Church to help them become acquainted with the church, and to ensure the new member has been included in Sunday school and church activities, and found ways to be in the ministry.
Office Volunteer
Office volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to assist in ways, such as answering the telephone, taking messages, and helping in the preparation of bulk mailings and bulletins.
Library Volunteer
This volunteer assists in maintaining the library.
Building Improvements
Volunteers are needed for church workdays and special projects that are skilled in carpentry, painting, and minor repair work, as well as anyone who will help with special clean up projects.
CareNet Counseling of Kernersville Volunteer
CareNet provides confidential, compassionate, faith-based counseling for men, women and children of any faith or no faith. Your help is needed, so please consider this great opportunity to do some things you want to do while helping others. Just come to MSUMC with whatever you’d like to do at your chosen time and be a friendly face to greet people arriving for counseling.
Church Mouse
This is a new secret pal program for church members and college students. Each student will be secretly adopted by a church member who sends a card to the student each month during the school year except October and February. In those two months a small Halloween and Valentine’s Day treat can be sent. In May the “mouse” will reveal his/her identity to the student.
