MISSION PROJECTS OF THE UMC
Bethlehem Center: Winston-Salem *
Located in Winston-Salem, this community center provides programs for inner-city women, children, youth, and families.
African Methodist University
A university which was founded and now operated by the United Methodist Church to provide undergraduate and graduate education for the African people.
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
The agency of the United Methodist Church which provides emergency and long term assistance in the event of disasters caused by natural disasters, political instability, war etc.
Curamericas
This project, formerly Andean Rural Health Care, carries out preventative and primary health care services to over 50,000 persons in rural villages and low-income barrios in Bolivia.
Volunteers in Mission/Building Teams
This ministry utilizes the labor of volunteers from congregations across the annual conference that spend two weeks or more in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and Alaska building churches, community centers, and clinics. Members of Main Street Church are regular participants on Building Teams.
Red Bird Mission
Located in western Kentucky, this community development program provides a school for 300, housing for the elderly, meals for the homebound, medical transportation for the needy, a jobs program, a store selling clothing and household products at low cost, and a housing repair and construction program.
Henderson Settlement
A program providing childcare, agricultural and economic development, housing assistance, and recreation for disadvantaged children, youth, parents, and elderly in an isolated, impoverished Appalachian community.
United Methodist Agency for the Retarded (UMAR)
This organization of the annual conference provides a safe home environment for adults who are developmental impaired.
Hinton Rural Life Center
This program advocates for the small membership congregations within the United Methodist connection. It serves as a place of training, renewal, and missional activity for small membership congregations.
The Children’s Home*
A residential home for troubled and in-trouble children and youth and their families.
United Methodist Campus Ministry*
This ministry provides a chaplain and religious programming for United Methodist students and others attending colleges and universities in Winston-Salem.
Hispanic Ministry*
Through this ministry, Oswaldo Garcia provides cultural (ESL classes, community center activities, etc.) and religious (worship and Bible studies) programs for the large Hispanic community in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, and, consults with Anglo congregations about ministries for and with the Hispanic communities.
Missionary Salary Support
The salaries of Michael and Ariel Collins, United Methodist missionaries in Cambodia, are partially funded through this support.
World/Hunger Poverty
This fund of UMCOR assists the millions of people suffering from chronic malnutrition and hunger through emergency assistance and long term development.
Western North Carolina Conference Outreach Apportionment
These funds are Main Street Church’s participation in the missional as well as administrative ministries of the annual conference and the United Methodist Church.

REGIONAL MISSION PROJECTS
Hospice
This service provides health care services and support for people with a limited life expectancy and their families at home, in the hospital, or in a long-term care facility. Hospice also operates a residential care facility, Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Crisis Control
This community service agency provides emergency assistance including, food, clothing, fuel, electricity, rent, and medications.
CONTACT Telephone Ministry
Trained telephone volunteers staff phones 24-7 to answer calls from people in crisis or distress, needing information about resources and encouragement.
Samaritan Ministry
This ministry in downtown Winston-Salem provides emergency shelter for homeless men. It also operates a “soup kitchen,” which serves breakfast to residents and lunch to residents and other homeless persons. Members and groups from Main Street Church serve as hosts at the Samaritan Inn.
Food Bank of Northwest NC
This program collects and distributes food to needy individuals and community service agencies in the region.
Potter’s House
The ministry provides care for the “latch-key” children of east Winston-Salem during the school year and a full-time program for these children during the summer months. They also provide a food distribution center and an adult Bible study group.
Forsyth County Jail Ministry
This ministry serves the inmates in the Forsyth County Jail with worship services, Bible studies, counseling, and personal supplies (soap, shampoo, tooth paste, etc.)
Habitat for Humanity
This international ecumenical ministry basic goal is to provide housing for low-income persons. Local people provide land, labor, and materials to build homes, which are sold to low-income persons a no interest 20-year loans. Members and groups from Main Street Church volunteer as “builders.”
Arbor Acres: A United Methodist Retirement Community
Through the Mother’s Day Offering, supplemental assistance funds are provided to help residents at Arbor Acres whose funds do not cover all their needs.
LOCAL MISSION PROJECTS
Kids' Café
Kids' Café is a ministry of local churches and the Food Bank. Three evenings a week, at-risk children are given a hot meal, homework tutoring, and playtime. The success of Kids' Café is wholly dependent upon volunteers from Main Street UMC and other organizations in the community. Kernersville Pastoral Counseling Center
This ministry is a part of the pastoral care department of Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center and provides affordable faith-based counseling to individuals and families. The Center is housed on the campus of Main Street Church.
Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville
This interfaith ministry supports and promotes successful aging through educational, service, volunteer, and support programs for older adults. Some of the programs include caregivers support group, companion sitters and respite care, counseling, equipment loan, household repairs. Members of Main Street Church serve on the Board and as volunteers in many of the programs.
Camp Close Encounter
A weekend residential camping program for at-risk children from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools that is operated by Main Street United Methodist Church. This ministry is entirely funded and staffed by members of Main Street United Methodist Church.
