Linville Scholarship @ Main Street UMC
Lola & Buck Linville Scholarship
On April 24, 1998, the family of Lola and Buck Linville, Jane Linville Joyner, Ann Linville Bailey, and Walter
S. Linville, Jr., established a scholarship fund for Main Street UMC. The following is an excerpt from their
letter advising us of this scholarship:
We are pleased to establish a scholarship fund for the Main Street United Methodist Church to be
known as the Lola and Buck Linville Scholarship. This scholarship and the funds we are now contributing
are given in loving memory of Lola and Buck Linville. In affirmation of the kindness, patience,
thoughtfulness and giving spirit that they illustrated in their lifetimes, we create this scholarship as a
living memorial.
It is our desire that this scholarship be utilized to assist deserving students engaged in either teaching
or science-related studies. This gift is to be the property of the Main Street United Methodist Church
of Kernersville, which will be directed by its Scholarship Committee in selecting qualified recipients on
an annual basis.
It has been the privilege of the Linville Scholarship Committee each year to receive applications from eligible
students, thoroughly review these applications, and our decision has always been unanimous. Most years this
decision is very difficult. The consensus has been, as well expressed by our former Business Manager, Tom
Vaughan, we truly wish we had more scholarships to award. It is our hope that anyone wishing to give a memorial
to a loved one would seriously consider a scholarship to a deserving graduate.
This year's scholarship award went to Jesse Byers, an East High School graduate. You would be impressed
with his credentials as was the committee. Jesse will be attending UNCG to major in Physical Therapy.
The final item on our application asks the applicant to share a faith statement which describes his/her current
beliefs, goals, and commitment to God and those around you. We would like to share his faith statement taken
from his scholarship application:
I believe the most accurate faith statement I could share would be the testimony of how I live my life
through my actions and how I influence others in a positive way. I have been faced with many tough
decisions in life so far, and my life has only just begun. Many times those situations have placed me in
between a rock and a hard place; however, with the help of the Lord I have always been able to avoid
the path of evil. Going along with those difficult decisions, I have also been one of solace and console
for many who have been in similar situations or in need of guidance. It is a goal of mine, later on in
life, to make sure my children are avid believers and workers for God as I am today and in the future.
My entire family has been faithful their whole lives and make me proud to be a part of their religious
experiences. I owe much to the loving of my parents and the stress they put on having a strong connection
with God. I only hope that I will one day inspire as much hope and faith as they have for me.
Wayne and Diane Byers are Jesse's proud parents and Mitchell is his brother.
Our sincere congratulations to Jesse!
