Our Story
WHY?
Our community garden came about out of the desire of church members to be
good stewards of church property, grow food for people in need economically
and nutritionally, and to nurture our spirits through gardening. The garden
is an outreach ministry of our church.
HOW?
We use a communal practice to select, plant, maintain, and harvest the crops we grow. The garden is open to anyone who would like to participate. Volunteers meet on a regular basis to care for the garden. Planning meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of the month in the garden at 6:00 p.m. We strive to use organic practices in the garden. Some of the cultural practices that we use are mulching our crops to suppress weed growth and to retain soil moisture, and scouting for insects rather than spraying with inorganic chemicals.
WHEN?
Regular Workdays:
Saturday morning 8-10 AM
Tuesday morning 7-9 AM
Wednesday evening 6-8 PM
Orientation to the Garden is held at 8am every Saturday morning.
WHAT?
We have harvested over 2500 pounds of produce since 2009. Food has been shared with people in need through local agencies, shared with church members, canned for use at 'Wednesday Night Live' our mid week meal, and pickles made to be sold at our United Methodist Women's Fall Festival.
